251 hostages were seized by Hamas fighters on 7 October 2023. Most have been freed. 24 remain in captivity alive. 35 are believed to be dead.

Palestinian hostages
Currently, May 2025, 3,577 Palestinians are held by Israel without charge or trial under administrative detention. (For details of Administrative detention see below.)

400 Palestinian children are currently detained, with 119 (about 37%) held under administrative detention orders.

Key Features of Administrative Detention:

• No formal charge: The person is not accused of a specific offense.

• Secret evidence: Authorities often base detention on intelligence reports that are not made public or shared with the defense.

• Indefinite renewals: The initial detention period (often up to 6 months) can be renewed repeatedly, potentially leading to prolonged or even indefinite detention.
