Keir Starmer laid the keel for the first of the Dreadnought class of nuclear submarines today, March 20, 2025, in Barrow-in-Furness, “as part of efforts to reinforce the UK’s nuclear deterrent capabilities”.

Can we afford it?
According to the search results, the estimated cost of the Dreadnought programme in 2025 is approximately £31 billion, including inflation over the lifetime of the programme. However, a £10 billion contingency has also been set aside, making a potential total cost of £41 billion.
Additionally, some studies have estimated that including all related costs, such as new infrastructure investment and decommissioning costs, and 30 years of in-service costs, the total cost could be as high as £172 to £205 billion.
It’s worth noting that the MOD has also allocated an extra £16.5 billion to the defence budget over 2020 to 2025, in part to “continue the renewal of the UK’s nuclear deterrent”.

Surprised we are short of money for public services?

Nuclear deterrent? Rubbish! It did not deter the Argentine invasion of UK territory, the Falklands,. It did not deter Russia from invading Ukraine. It does not deter Houthi Rebels from firing on US and UK shipping. If nuclear weapons are ever used a nuclear war would destroy all who took part. The logic? We will threaten to destroy ourselves in self defence. How convincing is that?

Diplomacy and friendly relations with other countries is the only answer. It works for us most of the time and most o the world all the time. Wars are unnecessary in the 21st century.
